  • “Knowledge Graph” Box Has Changed “People and Pages On Google+” Box

Now instead of “People and Pages on Google+” box users can find “Knowledge Graph” box on the search results pages.

“People and Pages on Google+” box will be replaced by Google’s search service “Knowledge Graph” box in the search results pages that will show information depending on search queries.

Trying to improve this service content and functionality, Google has lessened Google+ visibility a little bit. Still, it uses space (in the upper right part of the page) in its search results page.

Previous box: “People and Pages on Google+”

When Google launched its project “Search Plus Your World” in January, it made Google+ content more visible in the search results pages.

A part of Google+ push information was a content box called “People and Pages on Google+” that popped up next to the most relevant search results. Even being logged out from account on Google+, a user still continued seeing the very “People and Pages on Google+” box next to the search results page on the upper right of it. Such box even popped up within such common search query as “music”, “cars” or Facebook.

Such search results caused plenty of criticism (especially concerning Facebook because in the USA this is the most popular search query for the last 3 years) because within such actions Google was promoting Google+ first of all. For example, this service showed inactive Mark Zuckerberg’s account on Google+ but not his active account in the Facebook social network.

Current box: “People and Pages on Google+” box is no longer available

After launching Google’s new technology “Knowledge Graph”, users are no more able to see “People and Pages on Google+” box in any search result page. Instead of it, one can find other various boxes that are connected to specific search queries, “Knowledge Graph” box.

For example, for such search query as “music” “Knowledge Graph” box will show the content box with the following information “People related to music”. For such search query as “cars” (recently it would have shown links for such brands pages on Google+ as Toyota, Nissan, Ferrari, etc.) “Knowledge Graph” service now offers users to “See results about” movie “Cars” by Pixar company. Other search queries such as “Facebook” and “SEO” that previously have been showing “People and Pages on Google+” box do not show anything like that from Knowledge Graph.

Google: “We are blending the content”

Google’s representative has explained that this service blends resources with various content, including Knowledge Graph connections and Google+ accounts, in order to display the most relevant content on the search result page.

Well, for example, if to put such search query as “Google CEO Larry Page”, then this service will show his photo from his Google+ account and the next “Knowledge Graph” service box will show his last posts in Google+ network. There is also information (link to) from his Wikipedia page and some other links connected with Knowledge Graph information. Bearing in mind the fact that such links do not promote Google+ service as it was done before by “People and Pages on Google+” box, still such links offer users to take an advantage of Google service. This nuance can lead to the very similar criticism that Google has already experienced.

    Potential Knowledge Graph criticism

So, Knowledge Graph is Google’s search service engine. Still, if the very situation happened to “Search Plus Your World” (displaying not relevant and/or not user-friendly search results) repeats to Knowledge Graph, it will lead to another wave of Google criticism. Moreover, if it looks much alike to something that breaks the rules of free competition then USA government will become interested in it.

For example, for such search query as “Seattle Mariners” (baseball team) new service box shows blended information, where there is information from Wikipedia, last posts from Google+ and other information. It can be the following search result: team’s logo and certain text that links a user to team’s Google+ page but not to its official site (that might be the most logical).

Knowledge Graph box has its advantages and drawbacks. In general it gives information of high quality. However, the very fact that the majority of links on a certain search query offers a user to continue his / her search in Google or Google+ or even offers to create a new search query can lead to criticism of Google for promoting its own services.
